FAQ ABOUT THE CLC AND THE RELOCATION TO HEARTLAND CAMPUS

When will the CLC move to HCC?

The final mission for the CLC at its current location is scheduled for November 30, 2009. That afternoon Challenger Center technicians and HCC staff will begin the process of disassembling Mission Control and the Space Station. It takes approximately 2-3 weeks to disassemble, move and reassemble the simulators. Missions resume February 1, 2010.

If it only takes 2-3 weeks to move the simulators, why is the CLC closed for 2 months?

The move to HCC will not only transfer simulators, but also upgrade computers, monitors and software. As a result, CLC staff will need additional time to become accustom to the new facility and complete training on the equipment and software.

Why is the CLC moving during the school year? Why not wait until summer?

Due to the holiday season and school schedules, December and January have the least number of scheduled missions. The CLC provides summer camp opportunities for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. As a result, summers are very busy for CLC staff and students.

Will there be any changes in the simulators?

The consoles that make up Mission Control and the Space Station will remain the same. The configuration of the transport module and the arrangement of the consoles in the Space Station will change. With the move to HCC, additional seats will be added to the transport module and a second clean room will be added to the Space Station.

Will there be any changes in the hardware?

Yes, an upgrade of computers and monitors is expected to take place during the transfer to HCC campus. New computers, monitors, flat panel televisions and sound system will replace the equipment used by the CLC since its opening in December of 2003.

Will there be any chagnes in the mission scenarios?

The CLC will continue to provide Rendezvous with a Comet and Voyage to Mars mission scenarios. With the move to HCC, the CLC will upgrade its Classic scenario software to 21st Century software. This upgrade will not change the station tasks or mission objectives, but will provide for updated graphics and communication.

Where will the CLC be located on HCC campus?

The CLC will be located on the ground floor of the Community Education Center (CEC). The main entrance to the CLC will be located at the northeast corner of the CEC.

What is a micronaut mission, a school mission and a high school mission?

A micronaut mission is a hands-on mission for 6-48 students in kindergarten-fourth grade. These students rotate through three exciting activity centers: Discovery Lab, Transport Module and EVA. A school mission is a simulated space mission for 16-32 students in 5th-8th grade. These students become the flight controllers and astronauts on a mission to Rendezvous with a Comet, or take a Voyage to Mars. A high school mission is a simulated space mission for 16-30 students enrolled in a high school science course. These students conduct a mission to Rescuse Planet X.

Will the CLC continue to offer micronaut and school missions?

Yes. Due to the shared transport module at the Empire Street location, the CLC can only provide a micronaut mission, or a school mission for our schools. When the CLC is located at Heartland Community College, the CLC will be able to provide micronaut and school missions simultaneously.

Can I still schedule a mission for the 2009-2010 school year?

Yes. The CLC is still accepting reservations for the 2009-10 school year. To make a reservation, you can contact Brandy at 309-, or email.

When will teacher training workshops take place?

Teacher taining workshops for September-November 2009 missions will take place the week of September 14, 2009. Teacher training workshops for February-May 2010 will take place the week of January 25, 2010. Contact Brandy at 309-661-1621, or email to register for a workshop.

How many teacher training workshops must teachers attend?

For the K-4 Micronaut missions, a teacher only needs to attend one teacher training workshop. Due to changes in station activities and curriculum, teachers who schedule a school mission or high school mission are required to attend three teacher training workshops.

What is the cost of a mission for the 2009-10 school year?

School missions (5-8) and high school missions (9-12) scheduled September-November 2009 are $450, February 2010 are $550, and March-May 2010 are $650. Micronaut missions (K-4) are $450 September 2009-May 2010.

What is the cost of package options and Avanti's for the 2009-10 school year?

The Challenger Learning Ceter provides three package options: astronomy package option ($5.00/student); physics packag eoption ($5.00/sutdent); and discovery package option ($6.00/student). Avanti's prices have not increased for the 2009-10 school year. A list of Avanti sandwiches with order form is found here.

What is the cost of a mission for the 2010-11 school year?

Micronaut missions (K-4), school missions (5-8) and high school (9-12) missions reserved before December 31, 2009 for the 2010-11 school year will be the same price as the 2009-10 school year price. School missions (5-8) and high school missions (9-12) reserved after December 31, 2009 for the 2010-11 school year are as follows: September-November 2010 are $500, December 2010-February 2011 are $600, and March-May 2011 are $700. Micronaut missions (K-4) are $500 September 2010-May 2011.

If I have a mission in the spring (February-May 2010) where do I go?

February, March, April and May missions will take place in the Community Education Center at Heartland Community College. For directions to HCC campus click here.

Why am I getting invoices and literature from HCC regarding my mission?

In January 2010, the CLC will transfer to HCC campus. As a result, invoices and statement sent by the CLC may include HCC logos and addresses. However, payment terms will remain the same. Mission payments are due 2 weeks prior to the mission date. Package options and gift shop order payments are due the day of the mission.

Will there be any changes to Micronatus when the CLC moves to HCC?

The Miccronaut objectives will remain the same. However, the area that houses the Discovery Lab, Transport Module and Extra Venue Activity (EVA) will look much different. The Discovery Lab will make use of computers and hands-on activities at each of its stations. The Athena Transport Module 2 will be better suited for our smaller students as we explore the Solar System. The EVA will allow students to design, build and experiment like never before.
